Rupert Grint talks Potter’s finale and sex’n’drugs drama Cherrybomb…
Cherrybomb’s a change of pace for you…
Yeah, I guess so. I really enjoyed the challenge. There’s a love scene and some quite harsh stuff with drugs. It was quite a challenge, especially with the Northern Irish accent. It’s a hard accent to learn.
How did you find the sex scene?
Yeah, it was quite intimate. It was nerve-wracking. I was really nervous about it.
Were you getting up to as much mayhem as your character Malachy at 16?
I definitely can’t relate to their kind of lifestyle. It’s quite a scary world.
Did you miss out because of Potter?
Yeah, I did miss out because I didn’t go to school. I still kept in touch with all my friends though so I didn’t miss out too much. I don’t regret it.
Is Ron going to emerge as stronger than Harry in the final films?
Yeah, maybe, ’cos Ron does start to step up a bit more in the later ones.
How long is the final stretch for the last two films?
Fourteen months. It’s going to be long but it’s going to good. I’ve only got the script for Part One so far. We’re just about to start shooting and, so far, it’s looking really cool.
Does part of you dread going back, with all the greenscreen involved?
Yeah, it does feel like that sometimes because it’s a really long process and it’s quite slow. But it’s still good fun because we know each other and it’s such a good atmosphere out there because we’ve all been together for 10 years, so we have a really close relationship.
Has it changed much from the start?
Before it was different because we were schooling in between so that took up most of our time. But I finished school when I was 16 – I was never that interested really. And they do look after you. We’ve all got good dressing rooms and I’ve got a ping-pong table. It’s been very popular. I play with Dan and Emma. We do get very competitive.
What did you make of how JK Rowling ended the story?
I really liked it, it was a good ending. It was not what I expected, actually. For some reason, I thought at least one of me, Dan and Emma was going to not make it. But I think it’s going to be cool, the whole 20 years later thing. It should be fun. They’ll age us up.
Will it be sad for you when Harry Potter comes to an end?
Yeah, I think it will be quite sad. It has been a huge part of my life. It will be half my life exactly by the time we finish. But I’m also looking forward to being a bit more free and just seeing what else comes along.
